Opposition: Government’s EU budget veto would strip country of EUR 39 bn
Prime Minister Viktor Orbán’s planned veto of the European Union’s next budget would deprive Hungary of at least 14,000 billion forints (EUR 39 bn) in community funding, “or that much money could be jeopardised”, Democratic Coalition head Ferenc Gyurcsány said on Friday.
Speaking at an online press conference, Gyurcsány said that the prime minister’s remarks made earlier in the day constituted a “declaration of war”, and insisted that Orbán “is thinking in terms of war rather than having straightforward talks, and he seeks to use his own nation as hostage”.
“Orbán is saying that if the EU wants to know how we spend its money or it wants to see if the Hungarian people are free in their everyday life, he will strike back at another point… this is called blackmail,” Gyurcsány said.
“The prime minister’s veto is in fact aimed at Hungarians rather than the EU,” Gyurcsány said, arguing that the economy, heavily impacted by the coronavirus epidemic, could not be revived without community funding.
Hungary would “not receive the EU development funds which have been the source of financing all investment projects (in Hungary) in the past seven years”, he insisted.
Gyurcsány warned that “the EU budget will continue somehow” and “the remaining 25 or 26 EU members will set up the coronavirus recovery fund in some form” but “Hungary will be left out”. “Hungarians will either march with Europe or face an end,” he said.
Ruling Fidesz said in response that “this war was started by [US financier George] Soros and Gyurcsány against Hungary, to enforce the settlement of migrants because the Hungarian people and the national government had said no to migration.”
Gyurcsány knows very well that by tying the payment of EU funds to political conditions Brussels wants to force Hungary let migrants enter the country, the party said in a statement. “Soros has given orders to Brussels not to give EU money to countries that refuse to let the migrants in,” it said.
If Gyurcsány and the Left were in power there would be no dispute about this issue “because they would easily let the migrants enter Hungary and make Hungary a migrant country”, Fidesz said.
The party said it firmly rejected any blackmail and was ready to defend Hungary in any debate.

#1 Soros is not the leader of any country and can not order any one to do anything.
#2 If Hungary does cave in and allows migrants in it will be “the end” of Hungary.
Gyurcsány is NOT the Prime Minister of Hungary and should accept that fact.
Hungarian voters have – on several occasions now – OVERWHELMINGLY kicked him in the arse.
Instead, he and his present concubine pretend to be Hungary’s democratically-elected rulers.
He should – like George Soros – just find a quiet corner where he can curl up and die.
No one will miss either of them for one microsecond.
The conditionality of the funds that been vetoed wss not linked to migration, they were quite specifically being tied to EU Core Values which Hungary DID sign up to. This notion of these funds being tied to migration is a pack of lies. The issue that concerns the EU are the independence of the judiciary and a media that is without government interference (directly or indirectly) both of which Hungary had agreed to but is failing to honour.
Yet again, “THETHRUTHHURTS” has written a load of utter nonsense.
On numerous occasions recently and over the past several years, the E.U. – via its so-called ‘Commissioners’, M.E.P.s and ‘officials’ [not to mention various UNELECTED individuals such as demented nonagenarians, the wives of coffee-advertisers, and other interfering ‘wannabes’]- has insisted that MANDATORY RESETTLEMENT by all E.U. nations of (illegal) ‘migrants’ is a ‘human right’ for those ‘migrants’ and therefore not open to discussion.
The same mental delinquents have therefore claimed that such resettlement is an ‘EU CORE VALUE’ and MUST be ‘linked’ to receipt of any E.U. funding.
This condition also applies to laws within any sovereign E.U. countries that do not comply with the majority of other nations’ “constitutional rules”.
If the E.U.’s most recent ‘catch-all phrase’ [i.e. ‘rule-of-law’] does NOT include either MANDATORY RESETTLEMENT or OVERRULING NATIONAL SOVEREIGNTY, then the ‘powers-that-be’ should ensure that this is clearly stated in binding E.U. legislation which cannot ever be repealed.
Of course, that will never happen because most E.U. politicians / institutions prefer to engage via the ‘back route’ (something akin to certain actions by those ‘poofie-woofies’ that are so glorified within the E.U.) and never want to ‘spell out’ the truth for everyone to know.
“THETRUTHHURTS” should go back to kindergarten for a BASIC education before writing any more lies.
Ouch …..
@MORE*NONSENSE: I make a point of not reading comments in any online media that extensively use capital letters to attract attention. It is the written equivalent of shouting, a vulgar habit imported from the US ans is not just bad etiquette but is also uncouth. So froth away as much as like, I for one will not read what you say when presented with such appalling manners.
Somehow Victor the Beggar, a.k.a. Goulash with ears, will get his jar of milk that keeps he, his family and his oligarch friends in power. If the only chance is to get it from EU, as customary, he will, and he will have as usual an easy job in selling his palinka drinking supporters some fake reason for his lifting the veto. They’ll believe any lie he says.
If not, he’ll turn his begging hands to China, Russia, and God only knows who else…
I am pretty sure the EU will go on with the Recovery Fund as planned, simply by ignoring the vetoes of the two Eastern bullies and distributing the Funds among 25 instead of 27. After all, the EU has got nothing to lose.
And if Orbán goes for Huxit, I doubt that ” Brussels ” will cry much tears….
Mario, you are such a statesman. Tell us as the master politician what you would do as leader so people can have a good chuckle while eating their lunch. In all fairness Mario you don’t run anything here in Hungary but you mouth. Hungarians don’t want leftist policies including open borders and 25 million more parasites such as yourself destroying what the last muslim hordes didn’t manage to steal, burn or pillage during their last occupation of Hungary. Frankly it would be a good thing if ALL of the former Iron Curtain nations left the EU and started their own coalition based upon conservative values and military neutrality. Mario your like a fly that irates people and bring nothing good to any conversation you interject yourself in. Why don’t you move to America, I hear Biden doesn’t have enough braindead fools to fill his cabinet and executive positions. No doubt you would be instantly selected.
